A highlight of the new drama at Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival was The Major, a fresh interpretation of Gogol’s short story The Nose. VoR’s Alice Lagnado went to Edinburgh to meet Oliver Michell, who adapted the story for the Oriel Theatre Company. The Edinburgh Fringe festival is a showcase for exciting new drama by up-and-coming theatre groups. One of the highlights of this year’s plays was the Oriel Theatre Company’s production of The Major, a fresh interpretation of Nikolai Gogol’s short story, The Nose. The Nose, which is a satire about a man whose nose develops a life of its own, has caught the imagination of many writers over the years and has even been made into an opera with music by Dmitry Shostakovich.
