VoR speaks to Boris Lifanovsky, principal cellist at the Bolshoi Theatre, who in 1997 launched the first classical music website on the Russian internet in a bid to counter traditional Soviet music reviews. Fifteen years later, his site is visited by 15,000 people a day.

The site attracts classical music fans from all over Russia, many of whom cannot afford to go to concerts in Moscow or St Petersburg.

And that includes plenty of young people, who are keener to engage with classical music than their Western counterparts, says Boris.

VoR's Alice Lagnado caught up with Boris in a small concert hall in central Moscow before he headed off for a rehearsal at the Bolshoi.

Music: Boris Lifanovsky playing excerpts from the ballets La Sylphide and The Bright Stream (with the Bolshoi Theatre orchestra)
