The chancellor George Osborne has announced billions of pounds in cuts to the UK's benefits system over the next 4 years. Speaking at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, he said that the cost of recession cannot be paid by only Britain’s richest and that everyone has to shoulder the burden.

The Conservative minister for Scotland also attacked the welfare system saying that nearly 90% of Scots pay less in tax than they receive in state welfare.
